Totally Lost

To walk through Yellowstone is to walk on a planetary time bomb. This monster of nature is a volcano, a supervolcano, and I will explain how to get there and what you need to know about it. But one of the keys is a question I asked myself before going: how to get to Yellowstone?

First of all, I will give you a fact that will help us to take perspective: Yellowstone National Park measures 8,983 km² and its caldera 55 x 72 km². If we take into account that the Autonomous Community of Madrid measures 8,030 km² we will realize that this place is VERY BIG.

It is the oldest National Park in the world, and I visited it during my 26-day travel route along the West Coast of the United States. It is located between the states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, . That is, here:

The time needed to visit it and take advantage of it, as you take the ride, varies from the rest of the trip you have planned. We spent 3 days between Teton Park (½ day) and Yellowstone (2 ½ days) doing the whole circuit and seeing everything (or almost everything). Of course, with early mornings, running a little and rushing the sunlight. Yellowstone gives many options to delve into it, even if it is just to be stunned watching for 10 minutes a boiling pool of a thousand colors (but we’ll see that in another post, now we are busy on how to get to Yellowstone).

Grand Teton National Park

Yellowstone is only accessible by car from late May-June to early October, and during the summer is a major tourist destination in the United States, so it is advisable to book accommodation well in advance, if you book later than April-May you will probably have to stay in hotels far away from the national park.

Personally I recommend going to Jackson Hole airport, especially if you are sitting in a window on the right side of the plane, because it is spectacular landing at this airport watching the lakes in the area and the Grand Teton to our right.

Yellowstone National Park is one of the best known places in the world. Founded in 1872 as the first national park in the world, it has managed to preserve wonders like the Old Faithful Geyser and cultural icons like the Old Faithful Inn. For several centuries it was home to the Shoshone, Crow, Bannock, Blackfeet and other Indian tribes. However, these groups were banished during the 1870s by the park’s owners, who feared that there would be no influx of tourists because of the Native Americans living there. Almost immediately after its founding, Yellowstone became the main destination for tourist trips to the western United States after the Civil War. By 1900 it was a tourist success, and today it has been declared a biosphere reserve and world heritage site. Read more
