Una curiosidad: el nombre se debe a que, antiguamente, las mujeres que ejercían la prostitución vivían en esta calle y, para que los clientes supieran cuál estaba disponible, colgaban una rama de laurel en sus balcones. En tiempos de crisis, toda la calle se llenaba de balcones con laurel, lo que dio lugar a su nombre. También es conocida popularmente como “La Senda de los Elefantes”, por la posibilidad de salir en trompa y a cuatro patas como estos paquidermos.
La concatedral de Santa María la Redonda está construida en una zona pantanosa a poca distancia del río Ebro. Los cimientos se hicieron con sarmientos, los tallos de las vides, ya que no se pudren con la humedad y, por tanto, distribuyen bien las cargas y absorben los asentamientos.
El edificio actual fue diseñado por el prestigioso arquitecto español Rafael Moneo y revestido de piedra arenisca salmantina, mientras que el antiguo Ayuntamiento se ubicaba en el palacio de los Chapiteles, del siglo XVI, que fue la Casa Consistorial durante 115 años hasta 1980. Actualmente es la sede del Instituto de Estudios Riojanos.
