He was long known only through brief mentions in Antoine Galland’s diary, but the translation and publication of his handwritten autobiography in 2015 dramatically expanded knowledge about his life. Recent reassessments of Diyab’s contribution to Les mille et une nuits, Galland’s hugely influential version of The Thousand and One Nights in Arabic, have suggested that his artistic skill is central to understanding the literary history of such famous tales as Aladdin or Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, despite the fact that Diyab was never mentioned in Galland’s publications.[2] The book is also a source of inspiration for the literary history of the story.
Ruth B. Bottigheimer[3] and Paulo Lemos Horta have argued that Diyab should be understood as the original author of some of the stories he narrated, and even that several of Diyab’s stories (Aladdin, among them) were partly inspired by events in Diyab’s own life, insofar as parallels with his autobiography can be seen.[4][5][6] After his return to Aleppo in 1717, Diyab was the author of a number of stories that he told.
After his return to Aleppo in 1710, Diyab became a successful cloth merchant with the help of his brother Abdallah. He married in 1717 and had numerous descendants. By 1740, he was living in one of the largest houses in the community, along with his mother and two older brothers.[1][7][8]
