Ancient Egyptian religion was a complex form of polytheistic beliefs and rituals inherent to Ancient Egyptian society. It centered on the Egyptians’ interactions with deities who they believed emerged and controlled the forces of nature. Rituals such as prayers and offerings were attempts to gain favor with the gods. Formal religious practices were centered on the pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt who was believed to have sacred powers due to his position. The pharaohs acted as intermediaries between the people and the gods and were obliged to honor them through rituals and offerings to maintain the balance in the universe. The land also dedicated enormous resources mainly to ritual activities and the construction of temples.
One can interact with the gods for personal gain, ask for help through prayers or ask them to act through ritual magic. These practices, though different, were still related to formal rituals and customs. Popular religious traditions then flourished in the course of Egyptian history as the status of the pharaohs waned. Another important aspect was beliefs related to the afterlife and funeral rites. The Egyptians made special efforts to ensure the immortality of their souls after death, preparing tombs, funeral utensils and offerings in order to preserve the body and soul of the deceased.
