Hong Kong is one of the friendliest territories in the world in terms of visa policy. Citizens of about 170 countries and territories, including most countries of Europe and America, as well as the British Commonwealth, can visit Hong Kong in a visa-free regime for a period from 7 to 180 days.
Chinese who have hukou (family registration) in Mainland China must have an exit permit from the Public Security Bureau for any type of visit to Hong Kong (equally short and long term visits, including settlement). However, under the Individual Visit Scheme, about 270 million Mainland Chinese residents from the following 49 cities with permanent residence can apply for an appropriate exit permit from the relevant authorities. The permit is valid from three months to one year for one or two visits to Hong Kong. The permit holder can stay in Hong Kong for no longer than 7 days each time.[4]
Another exception is made for Mainland Chinese passport holders who are in Hong Kong in transit to a third country. In this case, the visa requirement is waived for those who will stay in Hong Kong for no longer than 7 days and can confirm their onward journey.
